Science and Nature of PainClose

Understanding distinct types of pain caused by specific neurobiological mechanisms allows all healthcare professionals to better assess pain and tailor treatment strategies. The effectiveness of pain treatment strategies are further enhanced by addressing the multidimensional nature of pain (involving biological, psychological, and social elements) through a combination of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options.

Following completion of this program participants will:

  • Identify various pain classifications and associated characteristics with a focus on nociceptive and neuropathic pain.
  • Recognize the underlying neurobiological mechanisms that cause the various types of pain.
  • Utilize knowledge of different pain types and underlying mechanisms to explore treatment goals and strategies.

Pain Assessment: Applying the EssentialsClose

Thorough and reliable pain assessment lays the foundation for effective pain management. Appropriate assessment uses both psychosocial and physical evaluation along with a diagnostic evaluation of the pain etiology. Further insight can be gained through patient self-reports. Ongoing pain evaluations throughout provision of care are needed to ensure optimal pain management.

Following completion of this program participants will:

  • Identify and apply factors essential to the effective assessment of pain.
  • List at least 3 unidimensional and 2 multidimensional pain scales used to measure pain in clinical practice.
  • Identify at least four of the treatment outcomes ongoing pain assessment can help evaluate.
